Tangy TD - A Roguelike That Kept Me Up Until 4AM
Tangy TD is a roguelike tower defense game developed by Cakez77. I first came across it through posts and articles about the developer breaking down in tears after seeing the game's success.
That moment stuck with me.
As someone learning game development myself, I couldn't help but feel curious... and a little inspired. So I decided to try the game for myself.
First Impressions
A little context: I love roguelikes and roguelites. It's one of those games that instantly makes a game feel more replayable for me. It also happened to be the Steam Spring Sale, so Ursaril got both of us a copy.
I went in completely blind. No gameplay videos. No guides. I wanted that fresh, unfiltered experience.
"And I ended up sinking 9 hours into it almost immediately."
Gameplay Experience
Tangy TD has the core mechanics of a tower defense game, something I don't usually gravitate toward.
But what surprised me was how familiar it felt.
At certain moments, I found myself comparing it to Vampire Survivors. Not because it copies it, but because of the way it capture that same addictive loop.
That feeling of:
"Just one more run"
Despite similarities, Tangy TD still stands firmly on its own. It has its own pacing, its own identity, and its own charms that keeps pulling you back in. Especially the moveable character which is fairly uncommon for tower defense games.
At some point, I completely lost track of time. The next thing I knew, it was 4AM. That's when I realized I had to pause. Not because I wanted to, but because I needed sleep. And honestly? I was already looking forward to playing again the next day. I even joined the game's Discord server just to keep up with the updates.
Took me so many tries to finish this level.

✨ Final Thoughts
Whenever I read stories like this, of indie developers finding success, they hit different because I'm also trying to learn and build something of my own. It makes everything feel more possible.
Maybe one day, I'll get to publish a game too.
And maybe someone out there will play it the same way I played Tangy TD, losing track of time, completely immersed.
